What is the UK Lottery?

The UK Lottery was launched on November 19, 1994. Initially, it held its draw once a week on a Saturday night, and it used the 6/49 ball format.

Due to its resounding success, in 1997, a Wednesday draw was introduced. Five (5) years later, in 2002, it was renamed simply to “Lotto”. The ball pool increased from 49 to 59 in 2015, including introducing a new winning tier, matching two (2) main numbers.

Another change implemented was the introduction of a four (4) rollover cap. There have been a handful of triple rollovers in this game, not forgetting quadruple rollovers.

In October 2013, more changes we ushered in. The maximum payout values for both Wednesday and Saturday draws were increased, including those for the bottom two (2) winning tiers. Additionally, the winnings for matching three (3) numbers doubled.

After a double maximum payout rollover on Saturday, January 6 1996, the British Lottery recorded its biggest win, £42 million (approximately US $59 million). Ten (10) years later, on January 9, 2016, this record was broken when two (2) lucky winners shared £66 million (approximately US $92 million).

How to win the UK Lottery?

During the draw, six (6) main numbers are selected randomly from a pool of 59 possible numbers. The Bonus Ball is also picked from the remaining 53 numbers.

You will need to match all six (6) main numbers drawn to win the maximum payout. There are also winnings for matching two (2), three (3), four (4) or five (5) numbers, including for matching five (5) numbers and the Bonus Ball.

UK Lottery Rollovers

Unlike other famous lottery games, the UK Lottery can only roll over 4 times. If there is no main winner by the 4th draw, a ‘Must Be Won’ draw is held.

If no one matches the six (6) main numbers drawn, the payout is shared amongst every cash winner.
